Glossary of Terms

Rational

Can be written as a fraction of two integers, e.g. 1/2.

Irrational

Cannot be written as a simple fraction; its decimal expansion never repeats.

Algebraic

A root of a polynomial equation with rational coefficients, e.g. √2.

Transcendental

Not the root of any polynomial with rational coefficients, e.g. π and e.

How to use every option

  1. Browse or search — type a name, symbol, or keyword into the search box, or click a category tab (Fundamental, Number Theory, Analysis, Chaos, Combinatorics, Geometry, Physics, Computing) to filter the list.
  2. Filter by type — narrow results to Transcendental, Algebraic, Irrational, or Physical (measured) constants using the type dropdown.
  3. Sort results — order the grid alphabetically, by numeric value, or by category.
  4. Switch views — toggle between a card grid and a compact list layout.
  5. Adjust precision — drag the decimal-places slider to show anywhere from 2 to 45 digits, or turn on Scientific Notation for very large/small physical constants.
  6. View full details — click "View Details" on any card to see its formula, definition, applications, a fun fact, and links to related constants.
  7. Save favorites — click the ☆ star on any card to pin it, then use the ★ Favorites tab to see only your saved constants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pi (π) is the most well-known constant, representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It appears throughout geometry, physics, and statistics.
